Ghana Qualifies for 2026 FIFA World Cup; Foreign Minister Promises Easier Visas for Fans

Ghana has officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday. The win sealed the Black Stars’ place at next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making Ghana the fifth African nation to book its ticket alongside Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus scored the decisive goal in the 47th minute, sending fans across the country into celebration. Ghana only needed a point to confirm qualification but went one better, finishing top of Group I. In the end, the victory was a bonus, as Madagascar’s 4–1 loss to Mali meant Ghana would have qualified regardless.

Following the team’s qualification, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, congratulated the Black Stars and assured supporters that the Ministry would work to make travel for fans easier.

Ghanaians can be fully assured that the Foreign Ministry under my leadership shall leverage our improved cordial diplomatic relations with the United States, Canada and Mexico to guarantee appreciable visa quotas for our globally acclaimed football fans. His remarks come at a time of improved diplomatic relations between Ghana and the United States, following the lifting of U.S. visa restrictions earlier this year. The new arrangement allows Ghanaians to receive five-year multiple-entry visas, a move that is expected to make it easier for fans to travel for the World Cup.

Ghana’s qualification is expected to create a surge in travel interest among football enthusiasts, with many planning to follow the national team across North America next year. Travel agencies and tour operators are already anticipating high demand for match-day packages and visa assistance services.

The Ghana Tourism Authority and other stakeholders are also expected to use the World Cup as an opportunity to promote Ghana as a tourist destination to the African diaspora and international visitors heading to the tournament.

The Black Stars now join Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia as Africa’s five confirmed representatives at the 2026 World Cup. The ninth group winners automatically qualify, while the four best runners-up will compete in a mini playoff tournament in November to determine one additional African slot in FIFA’s global playoff.

Ghana’s qualification marks a return to back-to-back World Cups, after the team reached the 2022 edition in Qatar. The four-time African champions are remembered for their remarkable 2010 quarterfinal run, where they came within a penalty kick of becoming the first African team to reach the semifinals.
